內容簡介

Adopted at over 325 colleges and universities in its Second Edition, David A. Cook\’s A History of Narrative Film has established itself as a leader in its field. Throughout, A History of Narrative Film integrates film history and aesthetics with an astute analysis of the technological, social, and economic context of world cinema. The Third Edition has been revised to include new and significant scholarship on early cinema and to feature the latest developments in contemporary film around the world. Highlights include:

  • 300 new illustrations, over 1,500 in all. Over thirty color stills in an eight - page insert trace the evolution of color film technology.
  • More on major directors --- Griffith, Welles, Ozu, Kurosawa, Ray, Bergman, Stone; more on major periods and schools of cinema --- Weimar cinema, pre-Soviet-era Russian film, the French New Wave, New Spanish cinema, and a new section on ”race” cinema and Yiddish film during the height of the Hollywood studio era.
  • A new chapter, ”The Former Soviet Union, 1945 - Present,” offering major new discussions of Baltic, Transcaucasian, and Central Asian cinema as well as new and up-to-date analysis of Russian film from Glasnost to the collapse of the Soviet Union.
  • ”Third World Cinema” --- Now given its own chapter, with deeper coverage of Latin American cinema, especially that from Mexico, Chile, Venezuela, and Cuba; Middle Eastern film has also been added.
  • ”Hollywood, 1965 -- Present” --- Updated with new discussions of key contemporary figures in U.S. filmmaking, and a new section on the increasing influence of digital technologies on cinema.
  • An Instructor\’s Manual by the author is also available.

DAVID A. COOK is Professor of Film Studies and Director of the Film Studies Program at Emory University, where he has taught since 1973.
